Deputies with the Harford County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that Da’Shawn Betterson and Malik Burns had been involved in an altercation in the parking lot of a Papa John’s Pizza. Investigators said that when Betterson left the parking lot to deliver a pizza, Burns followed him and shot him.

Karen Rollins had ordered dinner from Papa John’s for her two grandchildren and told WJZ that when she opened the door to take the pizza, she saw Betterson jumping around outside.

“So I asked him if he was OK,” Rollins told WJZ. “And he said, ‘Ma’am, can you help me? I’ve just been shot.”

Deputies said in their news release that when they arrived at Rollins’ home, they found Betterson had been shot multiple times.

Rollins immediately called 911. She told WJZ that the operator talked her through how to make a tourniquet and keep Betterson alert until police arrived.

“While he was leaving on the stretcher he said, ‘I’m sorry about all the blood,’” Rollins told WJZ. “And I said, ‘It’s OK; it’s OK.’ So he had a thumbs up when he left, when he got in the helicopter, so it was all good.”

Sheriff’s deputies said Betterson was flown to a local trauma center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Deputies arrested Malik Burns, and charged him with attempted first-and second-degree murder.

Rollins told WJZ that Betterson’s mother stopped by her house to thank her for helping Betterson.

“I never expected that,” Rollins told the station. “I told her, ‘Don’t cry and I won’t cry.’ But she was crying, so I got a little emotional because, as a mother, I know I would want someone to do the same thing for me.”
