Man shot, killed by deputy after fight over wearing mask, reports say

EATON COUNTY, Mich. — A 43-year-old man died Tuesday morning after authorities said he stabbed an elderly man who had confronted him for failing to wear a face mask before later approaching an Eaton County deputy with his knife drawn, according to multiple reports.

The younger man, who was not identified, was shot and killed by an Eaton County sheriff’s deputy who has been on the job for more than 20 years, according to WILX.

Earlier Tuesday, the man had been confronted in the parking lot of a Quality Dairy store in Dimondale by a 77-year-old man who was wearing a mask, the Lansing State Journal reported. The younger man had been refused service for his failure to wear a face mask, according to the newspaper.

Authorities told WLNS-TV that during the argument, the unmasked man pulled out a knife and stabbed the 77-year-old before fleeing from the area.

Deputies found the 43-year-old’s vehicle about half an hour later in a nearby neighborhood in Delta Township, Michigan State Police Lt. Brian Oleksyk told the State Journal. He said that after a deputy made a traffic stop, the 43-year-old got out of the vehicle with a knife and approached the deputy.

Officials told the State Journal that when the man refused to drop his knife, the deputy opened fire. Oleksyk said the 43-year-old died while undergoing surgery.

The older man, who was not identified, was listed in stable condition Tuesday morning at a hospital in the Lansing area, the State Journal reported.

Authorities continue to investigate the shooting.
