June 2 primary voting: Eight states, D.C. are heading to the polls today

Polls are open in eight states and the District of Columbia Tuesday, as a pandemic-delayed primary season continues.

Presidential primaries are scheduled Tuesday for Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota and the District of Columbia.

Former Vice President Joe Biden, who is the presumptive Democratic nominee, could pick up the number of delegates he needs to secure his party’s nomination.

Biden, who has been holed up in his home in Delaware since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, has 1,554 pledged delegates. He needs 1,991 to secure the Democratic Party nomination for president.

The total number of delegates up for grabs on Tuesday is 479. Biden needs 437 of those delegates to get to 1,991.

How many delegates are in play?

Here is the breakdown of pledged Democratic delegates for Tuesday’s primaries:

District of Columbia - 20

Indiana - 82

Iowa – Iowa is voting in congressional races

Maryland - 96

Montana - 19

New Mexico - 34

Pennsylvania - 186

Rhode Island - 26

South Dakota – 16

Rescheduled primaries

Four of Tuesday’s primaries – Indiana, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island — were rescheduled because of the COVID-19 pandemic and shutdown.

Montana put into place a vote-by-mail plan to keep voters from having to stand in lines at polling places, increasing their likelihood of contracting the virus. Maryland will also conduct its election largely by mail.

Who is on the ballot?

Joe Biden will be on all of the ballots as will Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont.
