Former President Bill Clinton released from California hospital

ORANGE, Calif. — Former President Bill Clinton was released Sunday from a Southern California hospital, his spokesperson said.

Clinton, 75, was released around 8 a.m. PDT from the University of California Irvine Medical Center.

The nation’s 42nd president, who served from 1993 to 2001, was admitted Tuesday for treatment of a urinary tract infection.

Clinton spokesperson Angel Urena released a statement from Alpesh N. Amin, who has been overseeing the team of doctors treating the former president.

“President Clinton was discharged from UC Irvine Medical Center today,” Amin said in a statement. “His fever and white blood cell count are normalized and he will return home to New York to finish his course of antibiotics.

“On behalf of everyone at UC Irvine Medical Center, we were honored to have treated him and will continue to monitor his progress.”

Clinton left the hospital, walking arm-in-arm with his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, CNN reported. He greeted hospital staff and gave a thumbs-up when asked how he was feeling, according to the news network.

Clinton was in Southern California to attend a private event for the nonprofit Clinton Foundation, the Los Angeles Times reported. When Clinton reported he was not feeling well, he was admitted to the hospital in Orange County.

An aide to the former president said Clinton had a urological infection that spread to his bloodstream, according to The Associated Press.

Clinton was diagnosed with a urological infection that turned into a blood infection, the Times reported. Aides said the former president was never in septic shock, the most severe and deadly stage of sepsis, the newspaper reported.

An aide said Clinton was cared for in the intensive care unit of the hospital because of concerns about COVID-19, according to the Times.

Bill Clinton has a history of health troubles, including high cholesterol and being overweight, the Times reported. He had a benign cyst removed from his chest in 1995 and a precancerous lesion removed from his nose the following year.

The former president also had successful quadruple coronary bypass surgery in 2004, the newspaper reported.
