Deer abuse video that went viral ends in court

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Pa. — The court proceedings related to the viral deer abuse video that was circulating on social media last November have wrapped up, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

Officials said Alexander Smith, 18, appeared in Jefferson County court and pleaded guilty to a second-degree misdemeanor charge of cruelty to animals, among other charges.

In exchange for his guilty plea, he was sentenced to two years of probation, community service to be completed at an animal shelter and through presentations to hunter-education classes, $1,650 in fines and his hunting license was revoked for 15 years.

A 17-year-old juvenile was also charged in the case in Jefferson County. However, juvenile court records are not made available to the public.

The abuse to the white-tailed deer was filmed and uploaded to Snapchat on Nov. 30 before it was viewed and shared thousands of times.
