Dave Chappelle sums up 2020 with scathing 16-minute SNL monologue

ATLANTA — Dave Chappelle dropped an incisive and scathing, 16-minute monologue as host of “Saturday Night Live,” giving comedic insight into topics including the coronavirus pandemic, the anti-mask movement and the 2020 presidential election.

Chappelle last hosted the show in 2016, the weekend after President Donald Trump was elected. This week he hosted as President-elect Joe Biden was declared the winner of the 2020 election.

The comedian tested some of his material with audiences in Atlanta earlier this year. Chappelle hosted 12 shows at the Atlanta Comedy Theatre in Norcross from Oct. 30 to Nov. 3.

He opened his monologue with a joke he tested in Atlanta, which referenced his great-grandfather, who was born a slave, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. His great-grandfather went on to be freed, learn to read and become a leader at his church.

“I thought about him all day today because I wish I could see him now. And I wish he could see me. Because I wonder what he would say. This week, I flew to New York on a private jet. Netflix started streaming a show that bears my name, ‘Chappelle Show.’ HBO Max is streaming it. And I didn’t get paid for any of it.”

“Yeah, if he could see me now he’d probably be like, ‘This thing got bought and sold more than I have!’”

Chapelle addressed President-elect Joe Biden’s election as well.

“I would implore everybody who’s celebrating today to remember, it’s good to be a humble winner,” Chappelle said. “Remember, when I was here four years ago, remember how bad that felt? Remember that half the country right now still feels that way. Please remember that.”

Jim Carrey and Maya Rudolph reprised their roles as Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for the show’s cold open. Rock band the Foo Fighters was the live musical guest.
