Chicago mom accused of stabbing, killing 5-year-old daughter

CHICAGO — A Chicago mom is facing a first-degree murder charge after police said she fatally stabbed her 5-year-old daughter.

According to WFLD and the Chicago Sun-Times, the incident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday in an East Garfield Park home. Chicago police said Simone Austin, 27, stabbed her daughter, Serenity Arrington, who later died at a nearby hospital.

Medical examiners performed an autopsy on the child, whose death was ruled a homicide, the Sun-Times reported.

Authorities arrested Austin, who will appear Monday in bond court, according to the news outlets.
