‘Angry isn’t even the word’: Michigan girl, 12, shot in leg

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A 12-year-old Michigan girl is recovering after she was shot in the leg Tuesday night.

According to police, the girl was outside her Grand Rapids home at around 8 p.m. when a vehicle pulled up, MLive reported. Neighbors said shots were fired, and the girl was hit in her leg.

The child’s family said they were furious over the violence.

“Angry isn’t even the word,” Latiffany Nieves, the girl’s aunt, told MLive. “I’m furious because for this to transpire where people are pulling out guns and shooting. I mean, I don’t even get what’s the purpose of it all.”

The girl, who turned 12 on Saturday, was taken to an area hospital and underwent surgery, WOOD-TV reported. Her mother accompanied her to the hospital, according to MLive.

The girl’s family told the website they believed the shooting was not random, although they said they did not think the girl was the intended target.

“We’re going through enough in life today,” Nieves told MLive. “I mean, anyone could have been a victim with that happening. It’s unfortunate that somebody really did get shot and it’s my niece.”

Nicole Matthews, another aunt of the girl, said the child was confused by her injury.

“She didn’t understand why it happened to her,” Matthews told MLive.

Grand Rapids officers were still investigating the case. There have been no arrests, WOOD reported.
