Ernest Jett Jr., 47, of Madrid, was arrested Saturday, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a Facebook post.

The victim was among a group of people riding horses along U.S. 231 at the Florida-Alabama state line at about 3:30 p.m. CST, WALA-TV reported.

According to the sheriff’s office, Jett allegedly came out of a wooded area and fired dozens of rounds at the group, WDHN-TV reported.

Authorities said the group was attending an equestrian event at the time of the shooting, according to WJHL-TV. The victim was treated at the scene and then taken to an area hospital, the television station reported.

The sheriff’s office said that Jett did not have a weapon when deputies arrested him, but a K-9 tracking unit was able to locate evidence and eventually found the weapon.

Jett was arrested by the Florida Highway Patrol and was taken to the Houston County Jail. He is awaiting extradition to Florida, where he will face a count of second-degree attempted murder and other felony charges, the sheriff’s office said.
