2 hikers found dead in Maine’s Acadia National Park after suspected fall

BAR HARBOR, Maine — The bodies of two Massachusetts hikers have been recovered following a suspected 100-foot fall during a climb in Maine’s Acadia National Park.

The 28-year-old man and 30-year-old woman, both from Rutland, had arrived in Bar Harbor, Maine, on Tuesday but were last heard from around noon Thursday, prompting family members to report them missing and a search launch on Friday evening, WFXT reported.

The identities of the hikers have not been released.

According to a news release issued by the National Park Service, the bodies were recovered Saturday morning by rangers working with volunteers from Mount Desert Island Search and Rescue and a helicopter from the Maine Forest Service.

“The woman discussed being interested in hiking Cadillac Mountain during a cell phone conversation with family members. Concerns arose on Friday afternoon when they did not check out of their hotel as scheduled or return to their vehicle,” the statement said.

Officials believe the two fell along ice-covered cliff bands on Dorr Mountain, MassLive.com reported.
