1 police officer shot dead, another injured after pursuit in Washington state

BOTHELL, Wash. — An officer died and another was injured Monday night in a shooting following a police chase in Bothell, Washington, authorities said.

Officials told KIRO-TV that a bystander was also injured in the pursuit, although not by gunfire. The shooter was taken into custody around 3:20 a.m. local time, authorities said.

Update 8:15 a.m. EDT July 15: Authorities identified the officer killed Monday after a chase in Bothell, Washington, as Jonathan Shoop.

Shoop had been with the police department for just over a year. He is survived by his fiancée, mother and two brothers.

Police identified the suspected gunman as Henry Eugene Washington, KIRO-TV reported. He was arrested around 3:20 a.m. and later booked into King County Jail on suspicion of homicide, according to the news station.

Update 3:10 p.m. EDT July 14: Police told KIRO-TV that a bystander riding a Lime scooter was also injured during Monday night’s police pursuit in Bothell.

Authorities initiated a pursuit around 9:40 p.m. in the westbound lanes of State Route 522, KIRO-TV reported. The driver refused to stop, hitting the person riding the Lime scooter before crashing through the center median and stopping in the 10300 block of Woodinville Drive.

Authorities told KIRO-TV that the scooter rider was taken to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center, where he or she was last listed in satisfactory condition.

Authorities continue to investigate.

Update 10 a.m. EDT July 14: Officials said a police officer injured in a Monday night shooting in Bothell was released from Seattle’s Harborview Hospital on Tuesday morning, according to KIRO-TV.

The officer, who was not identified, was shot alongside another officer after a police chase Monday night, the news station reported. The other officer, who also has not been identified, died Monday.

Authorities arrested the suspected shooter around 3:20 a.m., KIRO-TV reported.

“I’ve worked here over 25 years and we’ve never had an officer shot,” Bothell police Capt. Mike Johnson told KIRO-TV. “So, this is some uncharted territory for us and it’s going to be a rough couple days for our organization.”

The Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team (SMART) is investigating with help from the Seattle office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, KIRO-TV reported.

Update 6:28 a.m. EDT July 14: A suspect is now in custody in connection with a shooting that left one Bothell police officer dead and another injured, KIRO-TV reported early Tuesday.

The suspect was arrested shortly after 3 a.m. PDT, the news outlet reported. No further information was immediately available.

Original report: According to KIRO-TV, the incident occurred shortly before 10 p.m. PDT on Northeast 180th Street. Two Bothell police officers were shot after pursuing a suspect, reporter Gary Horcher tweeted late Monday.

Bothell police Capt. Mike Johnson confirmed early Tuesday that one of the officers died. The other officer, who suffered serious injuries, was being treated at Harborview Medical Center, KIRO reported.

Police are still searching for the suspected gunman, who fled on foot, according to KIRO. Authorities described him as a Black man clad in a gray tank top and baggy sweatpants. He also has a large Afro and is carrying a handgun, police said.
