Uber testing out Uber Pet option for riders with furry friends

Uber riders who want or need to take their pets along for a drive will soon be able to do so, but only in select cities.

Tech Crunch reported that Uber is testing out a new feature called Uber Pet.

Starting Oct. 16, riders in Austin, Texas; Denver; Nashville, Tennessee; Minneapolis-St. Paul; Philadelphia; Phoenix; and Tampa Bay, Florida, can select Uber Pet as an option before selecting a ride, The Verge reported.

The option aims to give riders "peace of mind, so they know they'll be able to arrive at their destination with their pet, without any interruptions or surprises," the company said, according to People.

There will be a $3 to $5 surcharge for selecting Uber Pet. The company told Tech Crunch drivers will get "a significant portion of that surcharge" in addition to the standard trip earnings.

Drivers will be able to opt out of Uber Pet trips in their preferences menu.

Service animals have been and continue to be the exception in accordance with state and federal laws, The Verge reported.

Currently, Uber has no policy against riding with nonservice animal pets, but it's encouraged to notifiy your driver beforehand.

People reported Uber Pet may be new in the United States, but it launched in Singapore in 2017. It's also available in Mexico and Brazil.
