The victim was listening to rap music in earshot of Adams, KSAZ reported. Adams told police rap music makes him feel unsafe after being attacked by people who were listening to the genre, KSAZ reported.

Adams told investigators the victim didn't say anything to provoke him but he felt the need to prevent an attack and stabbed him, KSAZ reported.

Adams suffers from a mental illness and had been released from jail without medication, his attorney told KSAZ.
