Former New England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi recovering from stroke

Tedy Bruschi played on three Super Bowl championship teams during his career with the New England Patriots.

Former New England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi is recovering after suffering a stroke, according to a statement released by his family Friday afternoon.

In a statement from the Bruschi family, the 46-year-old former player, who starred with the Patriots from 1998 to 2008, had a stroke but was "recovering well."

"Yesterday afternoon, Tedy had a stroke, known as a TIA. He recognized his warning signs immediately: arm weakness, face drooping and speech difficulties," the statement read. "Tedy is recovering well, and would like to thank the nurses, doctors and staff at Sturdy Memorial Hospital for all they have done. Tedy and his family thank you for your ongoing encouragement, and kindly ask for privacy at this time."

Bruschi was released from an Attleboro, Massachusetts, hospital Friday afternoon, his family said.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft released a statement Friday afternoon saying Bruschi had been an "inspiration to so many and positively impacted the lives of others by sharing his story and advocating for early detection of stroke symptoms."

Bruschi is a three-time Super Bowl champion and a member of the Patriots Hall of Fame.
