• Young father killed after accidental shooting while changing daughter's diaper

    VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. - An Alabama man, who was seriously injured Saturday when a loaded gun in a diaper bag discharged as he was changing his daughter’s diaper, died Monday afternoon, AL.com reported.

    Update 12:35 p.m. EDT April 17: According to the Jefferson County Coroner, the victim was identified as 22-year-old Timothy Roshun Smith Jr., of Birmingham, WBRC reported.

    Smith was changing his daughter’s diaper inside the back of a vehicle in a parking lot near a Chuck E. Cheese restaurant in Vestavia Hills when a gun in the diaper bag accidentally went off, hitting Smith in the chest and the child in the leg, the television station reported.

    Smith was pronounced dead at an area hospital at 2:10 p.m. Monday, AL.comreported. His daughter is going to be OK, the television station reported.

    "This was a tragic accident and condolences from the VHPD and VHFD go out to the family involved,'' Vestavia Hills police officials said in a statement Tuesday.

    The man was attempting to change the child’s diaper inside the back seat of the vehicle, parked near a Chuck E. Cheese restaurant in Vestavia Hills, when the gun went off, AL.com reported.  According to Vestavia Hills Police Department spokesman Capt. Johnny Evans, the gun went off as he picked up or reached inside the bag, which was on the floorboard, CNN reported.

    Lt. Michael Keller of the Vestavia Hills Police Department confirmed that the man was shot in the chest, while the child suffered a gunshot wound to her leg, WBRC reported. Vestavia Hills Fire Department Capt. Ryan Farrell told the television station the man’s injuries were potentially life-threatening.

    Keller said officers are investigating and interviewing several witnesses, WBMA reported. Keller said the shooting appears to be accidental, AL.com reported.
