• Teen Killed; Another Injured By Lightning

HENRY COUNTY, Ga. - Authorities in Henry County said two teenagers were struck by lightning during a thunderstorm, and one was killed.

Henry County Coroner Greg Cannon said Wednesday that 14-year-old Eric West was killed during the storm Tuesday.

Intense thunderstorms packed with a series of lightning strikes swept through the metro area.

West and a 15-year-old girl were outside at about 8 p.m. when the severe weather passed through a McDonough neighborhood. The fast-moving storm released several bolts of lightning, which hit the teens.

"It started raining real hard they (ran) for shelter up under the tree, which was a bad thing, but from my understanding the lightning didn't even hit the tree. The lightning hit the sidewalk and due to all the wires going underneath the sidewalk and somehow or another it got to the tree," said West's cousin, Richard Lewis.

Officials said West was pronounced dead at the scene. Medics rushed the girl to the emergency room at Henry Medical Center.

The girl, identified as Ceyara Taylor, is recovering. She is expected to be OK.

Lewis told Channel 2 Action News reporter Diana Davis that West and his family moved to Georgia from Mississippi in May.
