Naked man fatally shot by Cobb Co. police officer

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Cobb County police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that killed an 18-year-old man.

It happened shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Riverside House Apartment complex off of Shadowood Parkway.

Investigators said they initially responded to a 911 call and also a report of shots fired.

When officers arrived, they reported finding a man naked and holding a weapon.

That's when an officer shot the man saying there was a perceived threat, according to police officials.

"He was shot just outside the foyer of the apartment. I can tell you he was not inside the apartment at the time," Sgt. Dana Pierce said.

Police have identified the man as Tendai Nhekairo, a student at nearby Campbell High School. His parents told Channel 2's Sophia Choi that they stil do not know what happened, but they're having a hard time believing what police are saying.

His mother, Blessed Nhekairo, told Choi over the phone that she had never seen her son behave violently and knew of no mental health problems he may have had.

Residents were stranded outside of their homes for several hours while homicide and internal affairs investigators combed the scene.

Police are expected to provide more information about the shooting, including the man's name, on Wednesday.
