Man Killed In Wooden Stick Attack

ATLANTA — A Conyers man died after being assaulted with a stick on Friday evening, according to the Conyers Police Department.

Police responded to a call about two men fighting off Irwinbridge Road in Conyers around 6:39 p.m.

Investigators said 21-year-old Melvin Alfonso Briggs and 20-year-old Leon Lafleur were fighting at a nearby subdivision. During the fight, Briggs hit Lafleur in the head with a wooden stick, police said.

When officers arrived at the subdivision, they said the men were no longer there. They then followed a trail and found Lafleur injured on the ground in the woods, police said.

Lafleur was transported to the Rockdale Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Briggs fled to a nearby residence after the fight, police said. He turned himself in and was charged with aggravated assault and affray in the incident.

Police have secured the stick as evidence.
