Man Gets Life For Killing Ex-Girlfriend's Mom

DECATUR, Ga. — A man was convicted Tuesday of killing his ex-girlfriend's mother.

Luis Porras was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison without parole for killing 40-year-old Jameelah Qureshi. She was a mother of four and fiancee to a Dekalb County police sergeant.

Qureshi was gunned down in the driveway of her Lithonia home Aug. 15, 2009. DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James said Porras got out of a truck and shot her at least 13 times, with one gun in each hand. Her two daughters and stepson found her nearly dead.

"She just got off work and we came outside and she was shot," one of her daughters told a 911 operator through tears.

Channel 2's Tom Jones was at a DeKalb County courthouse when her 18-year-old daughter took the stand and described her mother's bullet wounds. Prosecutors said Porras killed Quereshi because she didn't want him dating her younger daughter. He met her online when he was 20 and she was 14. The girl ended the relationship to respect her parent's wishes.

But Porras' defense said he was never at the shooting scene the day of Quereshi's death. His defense attorney, Max Hirsh, said the real killer was co-defendant Amanda Dove.

"Amanda Dove did this with somebody in a drugged, enraged, jealous fit. She's a liar. She's a sociopath. And when she realized she was going to get caught, she blamed Porras," Hirsh said in closing arguments.

The jury deliberated for more than 16 hours and reached a deadlock, with all jurors, except one, voting Porras guilty. On Tuesday afternoon, jurors reached a conclusion. Porras was found guilty of malice murder, two counts of felony murder, possession of a firearm during commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a first offender probationer.

"Nothing will ever bring Jameelah Qureshi back, but today's conviction of Luis Porras is another step in the healing process for this family. We're grateful to the men and women of the jury for bringing justice to a family who unjustly lost their loved one," James said.
