• Zoo Atlanta giraffe may have fallen before death

ATLANTA - Zoo Atlanta officials say a 7-year-old giraffe died from internal bleeding.  Mona, a female giraffe, died suddenly on Wednesday.

A preliminary necropsy showed Mona died from internal bleeding but appeared to be in excellent health, zoo officials said.

Staff members said they noticed nothing unusual, so they are speculating that Mona may have fallen and suffered internal injuries.

The University of Georgia Zoo and Exotic Animal Pathology Service will conduct routing histopathological tests over the next two months to determine if any Mona had any other health problems, officials said.

Mona arrived at the zoo from Disney’s Animal Kingdom in October 2007. She has a 1-year-old daughter named Lily.
