Woman shocked after discovering $3K Peach Pass bill

A Sandy Springs woman says she ended up with a $3,000 bill for unpaid Peach Pass tolls, and she only found out when a police officer pulled her over with a suspended license.

“What? How did this happen? Why did this happen?” Rebecca Kubin said.

“When I called the state toll authority, I spoke to the supervisor and she is the one that told me these are from unpaid tolls from 2013, and in order to get the suspension lifted,  'You have to pay $3,000,'” Kubin said.

Kubin admits she made a mistake when her credit card was stolen.

“I am at fault for not updating my credit card information on time. However, there is obviously some type of breakdown in communication,” Kubin said.

Kubin says she never received notice about the unpaid tolls.  State employees say they sent notices to another address, where Kubin used to live.  The Georgia State Road and Tollway Authority does not used certified mail for notices, so it can’t determine for certain if violators receive the notification.

“There should still be some kind of proper notification saying, 'Hey, you are about to be taken to court. This is serious,'” Kubin said.

“The No. 1 thing we see is your credit card is expired,” said Bert Brantley, deputy executive director with the state Road & Tollway Authority. Brantley says what happened to Kubin is a good example of why it is important to update your credit card and contact information.

“We have an online customer service center you can check 24 hours a day and Peach Pass Go mobile app," Brantley said.

Kubin says she worked out a settlement with the state.
