Woman fights off attacker over cellphone

ATLANTA — Surveillance video at an apartment complex shows a woman fighting off a man who tried to take her cellphone.

The video shows Antinia Usher walking along a pathway following her son, when the suspect came behind her and tried to choke her.
The woman gave play-by-play of Monday morning when she was attacked by a young man inside of her apartment complex off of Fairburn Road in southwest Atlanta.
“For him to do all that in front of my son for my cellphone wasn’t called for,” Usher said.
A single mother, she has lived in the complex since 2008.  Though police warn people not to fight their attackers, Usher fought.
"I’m steadily fighting and letting him know, 'You’re not fittin' to get my phone.  You’re not fittin do this to me' and I jump on top of my phone and ball up,” Usher said.
He then runs away, beaten and without the cellphone.  Neighbors, like Shavonne Parks, are angry that this happened and want the young man in the video caught.
“I have kids myself, so imagine a parent trying to get up and go to work every day. (You're) being victimized for a cellphone? That’s petty,” Parks said.
Neighbors say the community is gated and monitored by surveillance cameras, like the one that recorded the attack. But they say gaping holes to the perimeter of the property are not being addressed and possibly allowing a bad element in.
“We stay in a gated community. There’s no reason why no harm should be brought towards us,” Parks said.
