Woman cashed $60,000 in stolen checks across 8 metro counties, police say

ATLANTA — Many of us still mail checks. That's why police want people to know about a woman accused of stealing them.

Police said she's stolen checks from mailboxes in six metro Atlanta counties and two other cities: Henry, Clayton, DeKalb, Fulton, Cobb and Forsyth counties, as well as Carrollton and Douglasville.

Channel 2's Lauren Pozen went to Henry County Wednesday, where police said the woman cashed $10,000 worth of stolen checks.

Pozen obtained surveillance video from the Henry County Police Department.

The video taken at SunTrust Bank on Eagles Landing Parkway in Stockbridge shows a woman in hot pink scrubs, who police say is Hefeezah Jordan. She walks into the bank, striking up a conversation with the teller.

Investigators said Jordan stole checks out mailboxes, forged signatures and then posed as other people using their lost or stolen driver's licenses to cash those checks.

Police said she got away with $10,000 in Henry County alone, but they believe that in total, that number could top $60,000 throughout the metro area.

Pozen warned neighbors.

“The fact that she is not alarmed, and she is calm, she is walking into the bank like nothing has happened…that makes it even more serious,” Lasandra Johnson said.

Investigators say Jordan did this for a four-month period, from June 2019 to September 2019, with a handful of victims across the metro.

Pozen obtained a mugshot of Jordan that was taken in Fulton County, where she has been in trouble with the law before.

Jordan has warrants out for her arrest in seven other jurisdictions for stealing identities and fraud.

Pozen asked investigators why we are just hearing about this now when the crimes happened last year.

They said it is because it does take some time for banks to report this activity.
