Woman blames gas co. for flooding

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga.,None — A Douglas County woman is upset about flooding in her yard and home after crews installed a new gas line behind her home.

Marian Hadley told Channel 2's Amy Napier Viteri that Atlanta Gas Light laid a new line in her yard but brought in extra dirt and gravel to cover it, creating a large hill.

"They came in, brought all their equipment and everything in," Hadley said.

She said that extra dirt led to a run-off down to her yard and basement when it rains.

"My septic tank and fill lines down here, and it looks like a lake when it rains, like it did a week ago," she said.

An Atlanta Gas Light representative said the issue was because of where Hadley's house is situated at the base of a hill. In a statement, Matthew Freeman said, "Her property restored to its previous condition, which included reestablishing the land grade and landscaping the surrounding area. Upon review, it appears any drainage issues the customer has experienced is due to the existing geography and location of her home."

But Hadley disagreed said the hill was less steep before the work began, and she never had flooding issues before.

"It's too high up and this has always been level. It's never been like this," she added.

AGL installed a tarp fence after last week's storms in order to prevent more flooding. But she wants crews to fix the landscape so the flooding stops.

"It's stopping the water from washing the pool and the house away, but it's really just a temporary fix on their problem that they created," Hadley said.
