Minute-by-Minute look at metro Atlanta's wintry weather

ATLANTA — The winter storm warning expired as wintry weather made it's way out of the state on Saturday morning.

The warning expired at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Several school districts have canceled ACT testing and other activities for Saturday because of the weather.

Many communities are also urging drivers to stay off the roads Saturday morning because roads are becoming impassable.

MINUTE-BY-MINUTE: 

6:30 a.m.: Final round of snow moving out of north Georgia right now.

5:00 a.m.: Precipitation will be out of north Georgia by 11 a.m.. A few flurries are possible this evening but additional accumulation is not expected.

4:34 a.m.: The Warning has been downgraded to an ADVISORY across the Metro. Plan for light snow to continue through daybreak. Watch for icy patches, especially on untreated roads!

10:22 p.m.

Delta says the airline has canceled 970 flights Friday and 290 Saturday because of today's storm.

10 p.m.

9:49 p.m. 

A person is dead after stepping on a downed power line in northwest Atlanta. We have a reporter headed to the scene.

8:42 p.m.

Due to dropping temperatures and inclement weather, the City of College Park has opened its Community Room at the Public Safety Building (3737 College Street, College Park, Ga. 30337) as a warming station Friday night and throughout the day on Saturday for citizens who are having problems staying warm inside their homes. The community room was opened tonight at 6:00pm.

8:28 p.m.

As of 8 p.m. Friday night, approximately 46,000 customers are without power according to Georgia Power's Online Outage Map.

8:27 p.m.

From the city of Milton: Milton's roads are in bad shape. The speed in which the snow hit and the quantity of snowfall that fell, all when schools were releasing and many were trying to make their way home, made pretreating more challenging.

7:48 p.m. 

At 7:45 p.m., Georgia’s electric membership cooperatives (EMCs) are reporting approximately 52,000 customers without power, primarily in north and west Georgia, up from 19,000 this afternoon.

Cobb County Public Libraries will be closed through Saturday morning.

More than 30,000 customers currently without power across the metro

This just in from Paulding County EMA: Roadways in Paulding County are extremely hazardous and most are becoming impassable. It is strongly advised not to attempt travel unless required to do so.

Just in from Delta: The ATL winter storm continues to challenge our operation and drive lengthy de-icing delays. 625 flights have been cancelled today, and we've extended our waiver to 12/9.

Forsyth County says several roads are currently impassable:

The City of Milton says Freemanville Road is currently impassible in the area of Rolling Links and Landrum. There is also a truck stuck on Hopewell Road at Brookshade and it is closed.

GHSA has announced that it will postpone the final two state championship games tonight (4:30 & 8:00) and the first scheduled game tomorrow (10:00 am) due to the weather situation.

2:10: p.m.

Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport says they have seen 759 delays today and 545 cancellations.

2:00 p.m.

Two State Championship games scheduled for Mercedes-Benz Stadium tonight have been postponed.

1:20 p.m.

The Winter Storm Warning has expanded again.

12:40 p.m.

Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport just issued an update on flights impacted by today's weather. A total of 487 flights have been delayed, and more than 400 have been canceled.

12:05 p.m.:

12:04 p.m.: Gwinnett County Public Schools is dismissing one hour earlier than usual today due to the inclement weather moving into the area. In addition, all afternoon and evening activities for Friday, Dec. 8 are cancelled.

11:46 a.m.:

11:44 a.m.: Due to weather, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport has had to cancel and delay some flights. Total delays: 335. Total cancellations: 352.

11:39 a.m.: Winter Storm Warning now issued for more of metro Atlanta,  including DeKalb, Fulton, Fayette, Clayton, Coweta.

11:35 a.m.: Hall County schools to dismiss school and hour early.

11:23 a.m.: Due to severe weather conditions, all UNG Campuses will close at 11 a.m. today, Dec. 8, 2017. All Friday evening activities are cancelled. The administration of the University of North Georgia is monitoring the weather situation throughout the region and will re-evaluate the weather and road conditions before re-opening.

11:05 a.m.: All Coweta Schools are closing early today, Friday, December 8. Elementary schools are dismissing at 12:45 p.m. Middle and High Schools are dismissing at 1:45 p.m.

10:44 a.m.: Forsyth County Schools are releasing early today, all after school activities for today and tomorrow are cancelled. For release times visit.

10:38 a.m.: Due to worsening weather conditions, middle and high school students will be released at noon today. Elementary students will be released at 1:00. DCSS buses will run normal routes at these earlier times. Thank you for your patience.

10:36 a.m.: Woodstock administrative offices will be closing at noon today.

10:34 a.m..: CCSD is starting early dismissal immediately. All parents may pick up students now. Student drivers will be dismissed at 10:30 a.m. Bus schedule: 11 a.m. high schools, 11:45 a.m. middle schools and 12:30 p.m. elementary schools. ASP is canceled. #SafeCherokee

10:18 a.m.:

 10:13 a.m.: Per Bartow County Schools: LATEST INFORMATION: All bus routes have now stopped. We ask that parents pick up their children at this time. This applies to all elementary, middle, and high schools.

9:54 a.m.: KSU Alert: Kennesaw State(all campuses) will CLOSE today, December 8, 2017 at 1230pm and reopen Saturday at 1030am.

9:39 a.m.: Per Cobb County Spokesman Ross Cavitt: "Cobb Schools to dismiss early. - High Schools 11:30 - Middle 12:30 - Elementary 1:30 Cobb DOT checking out reports of slick spots in NW Cobb."

9:10 a.m.: NOTICE: Paulding County school officials have been consulting with the National Weather Service, local law enforcement and local weather officials throughout last evening and this morning. Out of an abundance of caution due to the rapidly changing conditions, students at all Paulding County middle and high schools will be released at 11:30 a.m. today and students at elementary schools will be released at 12:30 p.m. ASP/Learning Bridge is canceled. All evening and Saturday activities are canceled as well.

8:23 a.m.: Bartow Schools says due to inclement weather, students at all Bartow County elementary schools will be released at 11:30 a.m. today, and students at our middle and high schools will be released at 12:30 p.m. * All after-school care and activities are canceled today and tomorrow, December 9.

7:56 a.m.: Cobb County Schools and its after-school programming will operate as usual, according to the district. However, parents are asked to pick children up from after-school programming as early as possible, and extra-curricular activities Friday night and Saturday are canceled.

7:44 a.m.: Moderate snow was reported in Marietta, also where the temperature is just above the freezing mark at 32.6 degrees, meteorologist Brad Nitz said.

7:30 a.m.: More than a dozen school districts have closed in North Georgia, although none are in metro Atlanta. Marietta City Schools, however, canceled after-school care, practices and events, according to the district's website.

7:27 a.m.: Pavement temps in Cobb and Cherokee counties are down to the mid-to upper 30s.

7:23 a.m.: Channel 2's Chris Jose is reporting snow in Cobb, Cherokee and Paulding counties.

7:17 a.m.: Snow amounts could hit 2 to 4 inches on the Northside. That could increase to between 4 and 5 inches in the North Georgia mountains, and patches of 6 inches are not out of the question, according to Channel 2 meteorologist Brad Nitz. Black ice is still a possibility Friday night and Saturday morning, when the low is expected to drop to 30 degrees.

7:09 a.m.: A mix of rain and snow has started in Marietta, but city schools plan to stay open, according to the district. Cherokee, Cobb, Forsyth and Fulton schools previously announced they would operate as normal.

7:03 a.m.: Snowfall rates could reach 1 inch an hour for a few hours in metro Atlanta, according to Nitz.

6:52 a.m.: Cobb and Douglas counties are likely to get snow totals closer to about 2 inches, Nitz said.

6:46 a.m.: The snowflakes are big and coming down quickly in Emerson in Bartow County, Nitz said.

6:41 a.m.: "Roads could be slick, especially bridges and overpasses," Nitz said.

6:39 a.m.: The temperature in Atlanta has dropped to 38 with rain in the area, meteorologist Karen Minton said.

TIMING OF STORM: 

As we head into the afternoon, by about 1 p.m. temperatures begin to warm up a bit and then we’ll see another transition from more snow and a wintry mix, to more rain.

By about 3 p.m., temperatures climb back into the upper-30s and low 40s.

WHAT WE'VE SEEN SO FAR: 

BLACK ICE CONCERNS: 

Saturday will be another chilly day with lows down to about 30 degrees, but plenty of sunshine with a high of about 43.

Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Glenn Burns said black ice is also going to be a concern going into Saturday morning as runoff continues with melting snow and rain from Friday's weather.

Temps will warm up a bit by Monday, with a high around 52 degrees.
