Gravel road dangerous for students walking to school and home, parents say

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Some parents in South Fulton are concerned the road their students walk on is too dangerous.

Hall Road is covered in gravel and dirt with no sidewalks for children to use on the way to school and home at the end of the day. The road is only about a mile from three schools: Langston Hughes High School, Renaissance Middle School and Renaissance Elementary School.

Parents and neighbors told Channel 2 Action News children have to jump into the ditch to avoid getting hit by cars, trucks and school buses. They also said the dirt kicked up off the road can be blinding.

“When they see the school bus, they know immediately to get out of the way. So several children run in our yard," Jerrilyn Boyd said.

Neighbors like Boyd and parents have complained to South Fulton since they took over from the county almost a year ago. They fear it will take someone getting hit before action is taken.

Channel 2 Action News reached out to the city for a response. Officials told us the paving of Hall Road and Jones Road by the schools are on the budget agenda for next year.

"Hall Road was treated with calcium chloride for dust control in April & August 2019. Jones Rd & Hall Rd have been scheduled for a new treatment starting on Tuesday September 17th," the statement said.

Boyd claims the city only put down the chemical once and she believes it's unhealthy.

“It’s the school kids. It’s got to affect their eyes, their breathing. It’s horrible," she said.
