Trees down, roads closed, thousands without power across Georgia

PICKENS COUNTY, Ga. — Rain and storms caused major problems across parts of north Georgia Tuesday – and the issues are continuing Wednesday.

Strong winds caused trees to come down, bringing power lines with them. There are more than 4,700 Georgia Power customers without power as of 9:45 a.m. Wednesday.

In Pickens County alone, there are 2,200 outages. In Bartow County, there are more than 1,200 outages.

Channel 2's Darryn Moore was in Jasper on Channel 2 Action News This Morning where the ground is soaked and the strong wind is only making things worse.

Moore said the wind pushed their Channel 2 live truck around on the ground.

Moore talked to deputies in the area who said they rescued a driver after a live wire fell onto their car.
Deputies also say trees have blocked access to neighborhoods.

“Mostly what we’re focused on is getting all of the roadways open. We’re not receiving a lot of calls for damage to houses that I’m aware of,” said Pickens County Capt. Jody Weaver.

Channel 2's Audrey Washington is in North Fulton County where Willeo Road is shut down due to flooding. The road is closed from Azalea Drive to the Cobb County line.

Washington also learned that Houze Road at Hollyberry Drive is closed after a power pole and lines crashed onto the road. Drivers are asked to stay away from that area this morning.
