Police: Armed man arrested after SWAT situation, child safe

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Police say they have arrested a man and rescued a little girl after an hours-long SWAT situation in Gwinnett County.

The man, Chad Prather, was intoxicated when he became violent toward his girlfriend at a townhome on Pointcrest Way late Friday night, authorities say. When his girlfriend tried to leave, police say Prather showed he had a handgun. The woman was later able to escape but her 18-month-old daughter was still inside.

The woman told authorities that there were multiple firearms in the home.

A SWAT robot was used to check on the condition of Prather and the little girl.

"Crisis negotiators have been trying to talk to him. They're currently clearing the residence with a robot to locate him and then locate the child inside the house," said Gwinnett County Sgt. Randy Work.

SWAT team members entered the home and took Prather custody without incident around 7 a.m.  The child was found to be OK and returned to her mother.

Channel 2's Steve Gehlbach saw officers hauling out at least 6 guns from the home.

Prather was charged with aggravated assault, false imprisonment and obstruction of a 911 call.  He was taken to the Gwinnett County Detention Center.
