PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. - Paulding County deputies said a man accused of stabbing his father and then barricading himself in a home for several hours has surrendered to authorities.
The unidentified man came out of the home just after 1 p.m. following negotiations with Paulding deputies and SWAT officers.
Paulding deputies and SWAT officers surrounded the home on Marshall Fuller Road off
Highway 61 in south Dallas at about 10 a.m. They responded to the scene after the man's father, a relative identified as Jimmy Allen, fled from the home and drove to a nearby fire department. From there Allen was transported to the Floyd Medical Center with neck wounds. Allen's niece, Brandy Hawkins called and told Channel 2 Action News he was also stabbed in the lower back and in the shoulder.
sheriff's Col. Jim Walker said they had to negotiate "very carefully" with the man, believed to have had a knife and possibly a gun, although authorities weren't sure if the gun was loaded.
Walker said the man who barricaded himself is bipolar.
Hawkins said the man's illness triggered his violent behavior.
She said Allen is out of surgery and doing "very, very good."
