Car chase suspect's capture caught on camera

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — Only Channel 2 Action News was there when officers tracked down the last suspect they wanted in a wild two-car police chase.

The incident began Friday afternoon when Douglas County sheriff's deputies spotted a stolen red Dodge Charger and a Mercedes traveling together on Interstate 20. A dual chase ensued, ending with two separate crashes, including one on I-20 westbound, in which three suspects came out firing.

"The suspects jumped out of the car, they were armed," said chief deputy Stand Copeland.

Police shot one suspect in the arm and took all three into custody. The scene backed up westbound traffic along I-20 for hours.

Authorities apprehended a fourth suspect at another other scene, but one man managed to elude them, at least for a few hours, until a K-9 sniffed him out in a shopping center.

Channel 2's Ashley Swann and her photographer had their camera rolling when they witnessed the dramatic ending of the search. It happened Friday night on Douglas Boulevard when a police dog sniffed him out in a parking lot, then chased him across a road before pouncing on him.

"As soon as he jumped right there, I seen he had a German shepherd right on his heels and the dog got him before he got past that truck," said witness Jake Hand.

"The dog just got him, that was awesome," said witness Tori Martin.

Investigators tell Channel 2 they believe three of the suspects took the red Dodge Charger from a Columbus car dealership and kidnapped the employee who had taken them on a test drive.

They believe the Mercedes was taken during a residential burglary.
