1 dead in I-85 crash with 'large debris field' in south Fulton County

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Traffic is moving again after a deadly crash backed up cars for miles and shut down northbound lanes on Interstate 85.

Police in south Fulton County said the crash happened around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday south of Fairburn Exit 61.

NewsChopper 2 flew high above I-85, where Fairburn police said one person was killed in the accident and there was a "large debris field" in the area.

Authorities said a tractor-trailer was broken down in the far right lane and was stopped in the roadway with warning signals in place behind truck.

A man driving a pickup truck didn't see the tractor-trailer, and crashed into the back of it at high speed. Fairburn police said he died on the scene.

Slowly throughout the afternoon, authorities reopened the northbound lanes before finally clearing the wreck.

Police have not released the victim's name, and they are working to with Motor Carrier Compliance and the State Patrol in the investigation.
