Sister describes 8-year-old's shooting

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Police are still looking for the gunman that struck an 8-year-old, but family members said the child is awake, talking and watching TV while he recovers.

Ahijah Geffard has a fever but is making strides in his recovery at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta of Egleston. His grandmother, aunt and sister spoke with Channel 2's Shae Rozzi outside the hospital Thursday.
 
"I gave him a hug," his sister, Azjah Ayong, told Rozzi.

The children were sharing a bed at their grandmother's south Fulton County home Tuesday night when someone drove up to the house and started shooting.
 
"I heard 'bang, bang, bang, bang,'" Ayong said. "And I didn't know what it was really, so I stayed asleep."
 
The 10-year-old said she then heard her little brother try to yell for their mother and she noticed he was bleeding.
 
His grandmother said a bullet went through Ahijah's back and injured his ribs.
 
"Ahijah's afraid to sleep in the bedroom now," the boy's grandmother, Pamela Phillips, told Rozzi.
 
Phillips said she wants to move for the family's safety but said the family can't afford it. She said her daughter is unemployed, which is why she and the grandchildren were staying in her home on Hassana Lane.
 
Phillips is asking the community for financial support. She set up a fund in her name at Wells Fargo and said any donations will help cover Ahijah's medical expenses and will help pay for the family to move.

The family is also asking for prayers for Ahijah.
 
"Please help my little brother," Ayong said. "He's all I got right now."
