Man shot, killed in driveway fleeing from shooter

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga — Police are hoping a man’s distinctive truck will help find his killer.

Channel 2's Tony Thomas talked to the sister of Brian Whitfield, found shot and killed in his driveway Saturday morning.

Tonya Milton says she can’t understand what happened saying that her brother, a 44-year-old father of three, had a heart of gold.

Police believe Whitfield interrupted a home invasion and robbery early Saturday morning when he was killed. The victim's brother said he was shot twice as he tried to run away from an attacker. A passerby spotted Whitfield's body in his driveway and called 911.

“We want to know why someone would do something so senseless, especially if it was over just material things. Why would they do that?” Milton said.

Neighbors reported hearing as many as four shots. Police say several items were taken from inside the home along with Whitfield’s girlfriend’s truck, a 2005 Dodge Ram Rumble Bee edition.

"It went 'pow!' and then it went 'pow', 'pow'. So I figure somebody must have have given a warning shot," said neighbor James Wehunt.

Investigator Colin Flynn believes the truck will be the key to this case.

“The vehicle is going to be easily distinguishable by a vertical yellow stripe on the back quarter panel of the vehicle,” Flynn said.

“I’m hoping that someone will see that truck parked somewhere and that the police will be able to find it and get some clue from it,” Milton said.

Police say there were no witnesses to the shooting as far as they know.

“I just don’t have any idea. I know that no matter what was happening, nobody deserves to die that way,” Milton said.

Milton called the situation a "completely senseless act."

"If anyone spots that truck or has any information  on what could have happened to my brother, please call Crime Stoppers," she said.
