Shots fired at man trying to escape carjacking attempt at gas station, police say

Police are investigating a carjacking attempt where they say a group fired gunshots at a driver as he tried to escape.

East Point police said a group in a BMW SUV pulled into a Racetrac near Camp Creek Parkway before 1 p.m. When the carjackers tried to steal a man’s car, police say he refused to hand over his keys.

The group fired shots at the man as he ran into the store, according to investigators. Somehow the man avoided getting hit and no one else was hurt.

Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes got a look at the victim’s car and counted at least six different bullet holes in the side of it.

Police believe the gas station’s location off the interstate may be one of the reasons why the carjackers targeted the location.

Police told Fernandes they are stepping up patrols at gas stations and making their presence more known in the area.

Police are still searching for the suspects but said the SUV they are driving may be stolen and connected to other nearby crimes.
