‘She’s with God’: Community gathers to remember slain college student

PEACH COUNTY, Ga. — At the vigil for slain college student Anitra Gunn Monday night, there were prayers, songs and tears as the Fort Valley State University community all came together to remember her.

Family, friends, professors and classmates gathered to honor a life lived with so much promise.

Gunn vanished from Fort Valley, Georgia on Valentine’s Day. A few days later, her body was found in nearby Crawford County.

Prosecutors believe Gunn was strangled to death. Her boyfriend is charged with her murder.

“She was kind, loving, free-spirited,” Gunn’s friend, Trey Cole, said during the vigil.

Cole last saw her alive on February 13.

He said he went to the vigil to remember Gunn and to figure out how to move past the pain.

“It helped me not really get over it but bring more positivity over it, because they said she’s in a better place,” Cole said.

During the vigil, there was no talk about how Gunn lost her life, but rather the impact she had on so many other lives.

“She’s gone to a place where there are no finals, no danger, no more violence, no more pain. She’s with God,” a loved one said at the vigil.

Campus officials said they will fly a flag over the next few days at half-staff in honor of Gunn.
