HEAT WAVE: Near-record high temperatures today but relief in sight

Heatwave

If you're hoping for some cooler temperatures, you may have to wait a while. The trend of temperatures in the 90s is sticking around.

On Tuesday, Atlanta hit 98 degrees, which broke the old record of 97 degrees in 1925. Records for the next few days will be in jeopardy, too.

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brad Nitz said Wednesday's record high is 96 degrees set in 2010. We got very close to it today.

It's not just near-record highs to expect today. Some of us could also see storms.

After severe weather rolled through parts of metro Atlanta, those in northeast and north central Georgia could see strong storms today. This includes Gainesville north to the Tennessee border.

Doctors warn of heat-related injuries

The chief medical officer at Piedmont Henry Hospital told Channel 2's Tom Regan they've treated several patients for heat related health problems.

"They can have severed cramps in their thighs and shoulders," said Dr. Williams Watkins. "If you have heat tetany, you can actually start having spasms."

There's also heat exhaustion, even worse, heat stroke.

"With heat stroke you will have an alteration in your mental status," Watkins said. "You might not be aware of your surroundings, that might prompt someone to call an ambulance."

Because of the extreme heat, Clayton County Public Schools has canceled all outdoor activities Wednesday and Friday.
