Pregnant woman pulled from overturned car after crash

MORROW, Ga. — Morrow police are investigating what caused a car crash involving a pregnant woman that ended with her car flipping upside down and landing on railroad tracks.

The accident happened near an exit ramp for Interstate 75 on Jonesboro Road. A witness took cellphone video of the moments after the car settled onto the tracks.

Theara Brye told Channel 2's Amy Napier Viteri he was in his car when he saw the crash and ran to help the driver of the flipped car.

"It went in the air. I'm really surprised she's OK. Last person I saw that happen to didn't make it," said Brye, who has worked in the past as a volunteer firefighter.

Brye told Viteri he had to go in through a rear window to get to the woman, who was unconscious, because all the doors were locked.

"As soon as I opened the door she woke up and started saying she was pregnant," Brye said, "She asked if the other driver was OK."

He said the car appeared to be exiting I-75 onto Jonesboro Road when it hit another car, flipped upside down and flew over several lanes of traffic. Morrow police identified the pregnant driver as Taneka Grace. The other driver and her passenger were identified as Melissa Stenson and Randolph Vaughn, respectively.

"It was, uh, I've never seen anything like it. I spent a little time as a volunteer firefighter in Colorado and I've never seen anybody live after something like that," Brye said.

In his cellphone video, the woman can be heard crying out as crews pull her from the car and carry her over the railroad tracks to a waiting ambulance.

Morrow police said Grace is being treated at Atlanta Medical Center, and Stenson and Vaughn were taken to Grady Hospital.

Brye said the car was leaking fuel when he found the woman with her head resting on a deployed airbag.

"She was holding her stomach. She did have her seat belt on, that's probably what saved her life," Brye added.

Morrow police said they will be reconstructing the accident to determine what happened. They did not have an update on the condition of those involved in the crash.
