Poll: Georgians oppose military action in Syria

ATLANTA — A new poll shows Georgia voters opposed Congress authorizing military action in Syria.

The exclusive Channel 2 Action News poll was conducted by Landmark/Rosetta Stone on Sept. 5.

The poll shows 54 percent of active voters in Georgia oppose military action while 34 percent approve.

The poll also shows 56 percent of Georgians disapprove of how President Obama has handled Syria.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid formally introduced the resolution giving President Barack Obama the authority to use military force against Syria on Friday.

Lawmakers return from their five-week recess on Monday and will begin to debate the resolution.

A vote to move ahead on the resolution is expected Wednesday.

Georgia Democrats favor military action more than Republicans by a nearly 2-1 ratio.

Emory Political Science professor Merle Black said he doesn't think the president has support.

"You have to unite your own party. He doesn't have his own party united right now. He's got to make an appeal to the nation that unites his party," Black said. "This is a huge credibility issue for the president. He's coming to the Congress because he doesn't have any allies."

The president is expected to address the nation Tuesday evening.

"The country is kind of weary of war and intervention in the Middle East and they don't see much good coming out of this," Black told Channel 2 political reporter Lori Geary.

"This is not a mandate to go to war from Georgia," Black said of the poll.
