Family: Boyfriend arrested in woman's shooting death

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — DeKalb County police have arrested a man in the shooting death of a mother late Monday night.

Officers arrested Carlos Jerome Simpson, 23, on felony murder charges and booked him into the DeKalb County Jail, according to jail records. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said Simpson lived at the home on Eagles Nest Circle where the shooting occurred.

Simpson's sister, Lawana Simpson, told the AJC that the victim was her brother's girlfriend and mother to his 10-month-old child.

Lawana Simpson said the couple was arguing Monday night when her brother pointed a gun at the victim. She said the girlfriend grabbed the gun and it fired.

Police said their investigation determined the Carlos Simpson and the victim were having a domestic argument before the shooting.

Neighbors told investigators they heard a single gunshot and saw the woman lying in the driveway.

Police have not released the victim's name.

Officers gave the couple's child to family members.

"It's a tragedy," said Charles Simpson, the suspect's father.

"We loved her like she was our own," he said of the victim. "This wasn't no hate thing," he said. "It just happened, and now she's gone from us."
