Police: Texas tourist killed in accidental shooting in Helen

HELEN, Ga. — Helen police said a man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after a bizarre accident left him shot and a stranger dead.

According to police, officers were dispatched to a shots fired call in the 8000 block of Main Street in Helen Saturday.

They found a man sitting on a bench with a small caliber handgun and a gunshot wound to the hand.

After further investigation officers determined Glenn Patrick Lampien, 53, of Jasper, had accidentally fired the gun, shooting himself in the hand.

The bullet then traveled across the street, striking a woman in the side. Police said she was pronounced dead on the scene.

The woman’s name has not yet been released, but police said she is a Texas resident.
