• Police swarm murder suspect in Marietta

COBB COUNTY, Ga. - Channel 2 Action News cameras captured the dramatic arrest of a murder suspect in downtown Marietta on Thursday.

Channel 2's Ross Cavitt was right behind Marietta police officers as they dashed to an unlocked pickup truck behind the post office.

Dozens of officers were just two blocks away from Justin Heard, 24, when he was spotted hiding.

Police were setting up for a New Year's Eve celebration in nearby Marietta Square when Heard, who was being questioned by other officers, managed to escape.

"Fortunately, we had enough officers on the scene that even though he was able to get outside the building's door, we were able to secure the surrounding area, and he wasn't able to get far from the building itself," police spokesman David Baldwin said.

The 5 feet 1 inch tall suspect calls himself "Little Tank." He emerged in handcuffs from the truck wearing only a pair of shorts designed for a much larger man.

Police told Cavitt that Heard is a career criminal, who has only been out of prison for two months.

He's suspected of shooting Andrew Abernathy in Gilmer County on Dec. 28.
