Police: Street racer took out light pole in Midtown

ATLANTA — Police say a street racing crash is to blame for taking out a light pole in Midtown Atlanta.

Officers said they believe two cars were racing northbound on Peachtree Street when a Jeep Grand Cherokee lost control and jumped the curb between North and Ponce de Leon avenues early Thursday morning.

Witnesses said the Jeep hit a tree, bounced off a brick wall and then smashed into the light pole.

Officers spotted a damaged Jeep on North Avenue near Georgia Tech and arrested the driver. Charges are pending.
