Police: Passenger shot at Gwinnett officer during attempted traffic stop

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga — Gwinnett County police are searching for the person who shot at an officer during an attempted traffic stop.

Police say an officer tried to pull over a speeding driver in the area of Dawson Boulevard and Graves Road in Norcross late Sunday night. When the driver refused to pull over, the officer heard gunshots, and as he continued to pursue the car, he saw muzzle flashes coming from the passenger side of the car, police said.

Investigators said the officer lost sight of the car, but other officers spotted the car and pulled it over.

The driver stopped on Jimmy Carter Boulevard, but the passenger was able to get out of the car and run away.

The driver was taken into custody.

Crime scene techs recovered several bullet casings and noticed items in the car that looked similar to what police officers carry. Investigators stopped short of saying the people in the car were impersonating a police officer, noting that it is still under investigation.

Police are still looking for the passenger.
