NORCROSS, Ga. — A Norcross police officer is on paid leave after a shooting outside a homecoming party overnight Monday on Brook Hollow Parkway in Gwinnett County.
Off-duty Norcross officers were working the homecoming after party at the Fusion Event Hall when they said they heard rumblings of a big fight that was going to happen out back. The officers called for backup and as those officers pulled up, someone allegedly began shooting.
GBI agents investigated the scene after two people were shot, one by a Norcross officer.
"As he approached the Waffle House, he could see someone in the parking lot shooting at someone," said Norcross Police Chief Warren Summers.
The officer shot out the window of the gunman's car. Two men, aged 20, were charged in connection with the shooting. Several witnesses told us it all happened very quickly.
"I just had got here and two minutes later I saw everyone running out and when I went across the street to the Waffle House, I saw the police start shooting," said one witness.
Police have yet to say what they think triggered the original shooting, but the gunman fired shots across two parking lots before being wounded himself.
Hours after the shooting, rattled witnesses were still amazed more people weren't hurt.
"I didn't see anybody shoot, I just heard it and it was behind me," said witness Ben Clark. "All I could do is get my old butt in that building, and I did it very quick."
The officer involved in the shooting is a firearms instructor for the Norcross Police Department and a four-year veteran of the force.
He has been placed on routine administrative leave with pay until the investigation is wrapped up.
