Police: Mom, daughter killed in Lilburn hit-and-run

LILBURN, Ga. — Police have identified the victims in a fatal hit-and run crash as a mother and her 6-year-old daughter.

Police said Maria Cervantes Maldonado, 36, and Melissa Cervantes were killed Thursday night.

Lilburn police said the driver of a pickup truck was traveling south on Lawrenceville Highway just south of Harbins Road when it veered off the road.

Witnesses told Channel 2's Kerry Kavanaugh that the driver swerved off the road and slammed into the mother and daughter on the sidewalk.

Police said the driver did not stop, but was later found on Rockbridge Road.

Spencer Prigmore, 43, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, hit-and-run and two counts of vehicular homicide.

Friends described Maria Maldonado as a mother who lived to work for her daughter.

"This morning her sister called my mom and she told us about what had happened and we both started crying," friend Erandi Rubio said.

Friend Jorge Vega described Melissa as a funny young girl who was always making jokes.
