Police: Man arrested after fleeing traffic stop

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga.,None — Sandy Springs officers nabbed a man who ran from a traffic stop Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Sandy Springs police Lt. Steve Rose said the man ran into a wooded area near Georgia Highway 400 and Pitts Road. The man disappeared in the woods, but was later spotted and fled, Rose said.

"Officers were in the woods a while looking for him, didn't find anything. Really were about to close the perimeter down and return to service," Rose said.

But police said the man was then spotted running toward the west side of Ga-400. News Chopper 2 flew over the Stone Park condominiums, where officers had set up a perimeter. Police rammed through the complex gate to follow the man.

Officers made an arrest around 1 p.m. The suspect was identified as Tommy O'Neal Smith. He was loaded onto a stretcher and taken to the hospital for an evaluation.

Police said they found an empty holster in Smith's car, but so far haven't found his gun. DeKalb County authorities had a warrant out for him for a simple battery charge.
