Police investigate gunfire in residential street

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Clayton County police are trying to identify the gunman and other people involved in a shooting in the middle of a residential street.

Several neighbors on Veracruse Drive called 911 Wednesday evening when they heard shots fired.

"I mean, I actually saw the sparks or the fire come from the gun and that's what scared me so bad," witness Linda Rigsbee said.

Witnesses told dispatchers they saw a fist fight in the street just before the shooting started.

"Then all of a sudden in the middle of the street there's a guy in a white hoodie shooting at that car," Rigsbee said.

The gunman shot out the back window of the car. Witnesses said the driver was hit as he sped off. Officers said the injured man drove about two and a half miles before they pulled him over on Jonesboro Road near Southlake Mall.

Police said a bullet grazed the driver. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and is expected to be OK.

Charges in the shooting are pending.
