Police: Elderly woman had Jack Daniels in purse after drunken crash

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Sandy Springs police said an 81-year-old had an open bottle of Jack Daniels in her purse when she crashed into several cars in North Fulton County.

The accident happened on Roswell Road near Hightower Trial.

Police charged Marilyn Schmitz with a number of crimes, including drinking and driving.

Investigators said the elderly woman was traveling south on Roswell Road when she rear-ended a car, crossed over into the northbound lanes, hit another car head-on and then smashed into a power pole and flipped her car.

When investigators arrived, Schmitz's car was resting on the driver's side door.

Sandy Spring's firefighters had to cut the 81-year-old of her car. She was later rushed to Atlanta Medical Center with several broken bones.

The arresting officer mentioned he found an open bottle of Jack Daniels in the woman's purse.

Initially Schmitz told police she did not remember drinking, but eventually she said she had a couple of drinks at a concert.

Police said Schmitz took a breathalyzer test and blew a .161.

As of Wednesday, Schmitz was hospitalized in good condition. She has a February court date.
