The majority of the interstate in the area is shut down as crews work to repair the damaged section of I-85.
GDOT said at least three sections northbound and three sections southbound will have to be totally replaced, which includes the section that collapsed.
Construction crews are working into the night and around the clock at the site of the collapse. GDOT said is will be all hands on deck throughout the weekend.
They said they hope to have Piedmont Road reopened by Monday.
Officials said it will take months to complete the repairs.
"We're not able to give you a firm estimate at this moment, but you should know this will take at least a few months, GDOT commissioner Russell McMurray said.
Governor Nathan Deal has secured $10 million from the federal government to help with the repairs.
