Parents alarmed after 'Death Note' book found in school

NORTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Parents are alarmed after a student brought a "Death Note" book to a metro Atlanta school.

Hopewell Middle School officials sent a letter to parents this weekend about the frightening discovery.

"Death Note" is based off an anime series in which a student comes into possession of a magical notebook that gives him the power to kill anybody whose name is in it.

The school wanted to make clear that there were no specific threats or plans in the book, and they said they don't feel there was actually any legitimate threat to anyone at the school.

But parents are still concerned.

"In this day and age, with everything that goes on in schools, why would you... I mean it's crazy," said Carol Eisenhach

Eisenhach's daughter is now in her 20's, but at one point went to Hopewell Middle School. Her daughter is also a fan of the anime.

"Some of them are a bit darker than others," Eisenhach said of the anime series.

The school sent a voicemail last week to parents saying that a student had turned in a book modeled after the series.

The voicemail went on to say that school police and psychologists have been identified and any students named in the book were notified.

"Just being informed, so you can tell the kids to watch, be aware of their surroundings and don't be afraid to tell someone if you see something unusual," said parent Michelle Onorato.

Fulton County school officials said they have identified the student and had begun the process of addressing the issue according to the student code of conduct.
